Exeter was the laziest dog Rose Marie had ever met, but he loved the snow. Fresh snow was the easiest way to get him out of the house, especially if that fresh snow was piled a foot high.

It was a good thing John lived in Boulder, even if that meant Rose Marie never got to see him.

Ana got a ride home from someone, because it was raining by the time she got out of work and she didn't have her umbrella with her. Rose Marie had put on her pajamas and was watching a movie on TV.

"I thought about calling you to come pick me up," Ana told her, "but I thought that would be mean."

"It would've been, yeah," Rose Marie said. "This movie is completely confusing me. Thanks for taking my car to get inspected. Can I write you a check tomorrow?"

"Sure." Ana shrugged out of her jacket and kicked her shoes off. By April there was always a pile of shoes right by the front door, because neither of the girls wanted to track mud and sand and crap all over the house during the winter when that kind of thing was common. This did mean that sometimes it was hard for them to find both shoes of a pair when they were in a hurry - the pile was already an actual pile, if a small one, rather than a row of shoes neatly matched in pairs - but at the same time there was much less crud to sweep up in the rest of the house. So it was a trade-off they were both willing to make.

"There's, like, a scoop of Chunky Monkey left if you want it," Rose Marie said, "otherwise I'm going to finish it."

"Go for it. It's too gross out to eat ice cream."

"It's never too gross for ice cream." Rose Marie got up, went into the kitchen, and took the ice cream out of the freezer. She got a spoon and went back into the living room. Ana plopped down on the couch to watch TV as well.

"What is this?" she asked.

"Some Civil War movie with Tobey Maguire. He's got long hair, it's a little weird. I missed the beginning so I'm kind of confused."

"Kurt's current girlfriend came into the Diesel and I got to take her order. She didn't recognize me. I wanted to ask her if Kurt put his cold feet all over her in the middle of the night, or if it was only me he did that to. But I thought that would be mean."

"You opted out of a lot of mean tonight," Rose Marie observed. She scraped the last bits of ice cream off the sides of the container and then put it on the coffee table.

"I called one of my fellow coffee slingers a twat. I was just teasing him, though."

"Did he know that?"

"Oh, yeah. Did I tell you about the girl who just started last week? Jemima. I don't know what her parents were thinking, naming her that. She overheard me and got all offended. She gave me a lecture while I was making someone's sandwich."

"Oh god." Rose Marie snickered. Ana didn't like being lectured to by anyone she thought knew less than she did, which included anyone who'd been working at the Diesel Cafe a shorter length of time. She also didn't like being lectured to by someone who took it seriously when she was just joking around, and she especially didn't like being lectured to about one thing when she was busy doing another thing.

"I ignored her. I had egg salad all over my hands, I had other things to think about." She also didn't like hard-boiled eggs, which meant she didn't like egg salad. Rose Marie thought that was a shame - she made an excellent egg salad. It was a secret Poole family recipe.

(Actually it was just chopped hard-boiled eggs, mayo, a little mustard, and some sweet relish, which anyone with discerning taste buds could figure out, but the Pooles liked referring to it as a secret family recipe.)

"I'm opening tomorrow," Ana went on. "I switched shifts so I could have tomorrow night off so we can go to karaoke." She made a satisfied face in Rose Marie's direction.

"I don't sing in public," Rose Marie protested.

"That's ok, neither do I. Anyway, it's not public, it's the Asgard."

"Don't take pictures this time. John saw the last ones on Facebook and laughed at me for ten minutes straight."

"They weren't even funny!" In fact, they'd been taken in dim bar lighting by Ana's phone, which meant they also weren't very good.

"He said I looked too serious to be in a bar," Rose Marie said. "I guess I had my intent singing face on."

"Well, if I do take pictures I promise to filter them better, how's that?"

"Just don't take them at all."

"It's karaoke, Rose Marie, it's not like someone's going to use them for blackmail."

"No, just my brother probably showing them to all his friends. And my parents."

"Your parents are on Facebook?"

"Oh god no." That was a scary thought. "But that's not going to stop John if he finds something that makes me look silly that he wants to share."

"You're still coming with me, right? Rush wants to meet you."

"What did you tell him?"

"That's for me to know and you to find out." Now Ana looked smug. She got up, took the empty ice cream carton and spoon into the kitchen, and then disappeared into her bedroom. Eventually Rose Marie heard water running in the bathroom, which she took as a sign that maybe she should consider getting ready too. Although she was alreay in her pajamas, and all she had to do was wash her face and brush her teeth, and that would take maybe ten minutes.

She'd watch the movie for a little longer - the guys in it were cute, and she thought she might have figured out who most of them were - and then go to bed. And tomorrow she'd wake up on time and take the T to work like a normal person and not have to worry about her car until Saturday. It was a good plan.

Ride With the Devil :D I'm liking this! Also, I don't know how I forgot this was what you're writing for Nano but I did... somehow when you mentioned it before, Nano felt like a MILLION YEARS AWAY. And yet here we are!

yep! i had to look it up on imdb because i couldn't remember a. the title, or b. who else was in it besides tobey maguire and jonathan rhys-meyers. (who is SO PRETTY OMG.) and then it turned out none of those details actually mattered. >.< tobey looked SO WEIRD with long hair. not the best look for him.

i think i mentioned it in september? august? i don't think the last time they reran lo-fi and mayhem, but probably the time before that. just wait until i bring in the fbi and none of them have a tendency to babble. :D

...this is totally the time to confess that I have to fastforward the beginnings of all the cm episodes and not watch until the team are on screen, right? *cannot deal with the tension*

just tension. I am notoriously bad at tv for that reason, but cm generally is consistent about where it is so I can skip. And not even really tension as such, but people going about their business unaware... (gore is ok except blood sometimes and also looking-like-meat sometimes)

Edit: yes, it's m's fault, and yes...
