"And don't pout at me. That might work with sweet little old ladies and your sister, but I can resist fifty-five small children giving me the puppy dog eyes. I can resist you."

Aidan responded by batting his eyelashes. Stella rolled her eyes. Val squirted chocolate syrup on his ice cream, since they weren't paying attention and he didn't feel rude doing so. Stella still didn't get out the whipped cream, though.

"I can always cover myself with chocolate syrup," Aidan commented, dousing his ice cream with it.

"You can also wash the sheets afterwards," Stella said.

"You won't lick it off me?" He pretended to be hurt.

"I'm watching my girlish figure," she said primly. The effect was a bit ruined by the full spoon of ice cream she stuck in her mouth.

"Well, fine. Hey, maybe Val will do it instead."

Val almost choked on his ice cream.

"No?" Aidan asked innocently, batting his eyelashes again.

"I'm not washing your sticky sheets," Val managed to say. Aidan laughed.

"If we do it right, they don't get sticky."

"If you do it right, they don't get sticky with chocolate sauce," Stella corrected him.

Val was pretty sure he was turning bright red right about now. But at least he wasn't trying to breathe ice cream any more, and he wasn't about to pass out from the thought of a naked Aidan covered in chocolate syrup.

"This is so fun," Stella went on, grinning. "You should come over for dinner more often."

"Next time we'll have more fun food," Aidan said. "There was this show on the Travel Channel about these girls who act as giant sushi platters for parties. They're all naked except for a bunch of leaves, and they only wear those so the sushi isn't sitting on their skin. It's more hygienic like that, you know. Now that would be fun."

"I don't really like sushi," Val said.

"That's ok. You can be the plate. And if it's just me and Stella, we don't care if our sushi comes in contact with you." He sucked a mound of ice cream off his spoon. He looked completely serious. Val glanced at Stella, who just looked amused.

"You have a flat stomach," Aidan continued, "so we wouldn't have to worry about the rolls and stuff falling off you. I don't think you'd fit on the table, though. I think you're too tall."

"I'm too tall for the table," Stella said.

"We'd roll our own rolls" - Stella snickered - "maybe make some cold noodles, put them in a little pile on your bellybutton or something. What do you think?" He made an expectant face.

"I think you'd be cute covered in raw fish," Stella told Val.

Val suddenly had the weirdest feeling that they were both coming on to him. They both seemed too serious to be just teasing. It was a little disconcerting. But then he reminded himself that he was usually pretty dense about these kinds of things, and seven times out of ten had to be told that someone was flirting with him - and the other three times he could guess someone was flirting but couldn't figure out why - so his impressions right now were probably off. Well, he could try to play along with them, anyway.

"It's a good thing you don't have any cats," he said.

"Yeah, all you'd have to worry about is me eating you naked," Aidan said. Stella snorted, like someone trying not to laugh and hiding it in, say, a spoonful of ice cream. Aidan just put his innocent face back on.

"You sure you want to see me naked?"

"I do," Stella said brightly. "But I've been told I'm a big pervert."

"Yeah, by your brother," Aidan said. "Your brother's a prude."

"No he's not. He just doesn't like thinking about his baby sister having sex."

"I don't like thinking about my baby sister having sex either. Can we change the conversation back to naked sushi?"

"I should probably go home soon," Val said. It was only partly an excuse to get him away from that particular conversational thread. "It'll take me an hour."

"Aidan will drive you home," Stella volunteered. "Hang out for a while. We'll stop teasing you about being a naked plate."

"Do we have to?" Aidan whined.

"Yes. Otherwise we'll offend Val and he'll leave."

"I'm not offended," Val said. "It's just... kind of weird."

"Well, I'll stop. Come sit on the couch."

Stella got up, collected their bowls and spoons, and put them in the sink. She put the chocolate syrup back in the fridge and went into the living room, where she sat in the middle of the couch and patted the cushions on either side of her. Aidan obediently sat on one side and Val sat on the other.

"Now isn't this better?" she said. "Aidan said someone at Caswell Etc has the hots for you?" She directed that at Val and made it sound like a question.

"He did?" Val repeated. "Who?" Aidan snickered. "What? I don't know who you're talking about."

"Catherine stole you from him," Aidan said. "I heard he told her off last week for taking up all your time with her cases."

"Theo? Oh, god, Aidan, he's married. And uptight."

"Have you met his wife?"

"It doesn't matter. He's straight."

"And you know this how?" Aidan was grinning.

"You're teasing me, stop it. I'd believe Catherine had the hots for me more than Theo."

"Maybe she likes ordering guys around." He made his eyebrows jump up and down. Stella giggled.

"I can't believe we're talking about this," Val muttered. "Didn't you say the first rule of work was that you don't talk about work?"

"This isn't work. This is your sex life." Aidan's grin widened, if such a thing was even possible.

"What sex life? Can we talk about something else?"

"Fine." Aidan sighed a put-upon sigh. "We'll talk about my sex life."

"No we won't," Stella said. "We'll talk about the really good show Val missed last night."

"Let's talk about that," Val agreed, relieved. Talking about his sex life - or lack thereof - made him a little uncomfortable no matter who it was, unless it was his roommate, but Kirk was so low-key and chill about other people's lives that it was hard to work up any kind of discomfort around him. But now Aidan going on about where Val might figure in the sex lives of lawyers made him kind of twitchy. Which was a little depressing, considering that Aidan was so easy to be around so much of the time.

Val allowed himself the realization that this discussion made him uncomfortable because it made him think about where he might figure in Aidan's sex life, and where Aidan might figure in his, and he just did not want to go there with someone he really liked as a friend. Especially since the someone had a girlfriend already, and was thus off the market.
