She had just started unscrewing a hihat when Oscar came in. He didn't lie down or sit and watch her or anything, and by the time she'd gotten the hihat taken apart and packed up, he was pacing restlessly and whining like he did sometimes before she went to a gig. She could always tell when he was upset that she was leaving him, even though he should have known that she always came home.
But now he was probably worried she'd leave like everyone else had left, like the little old lady and Cujo and Cujo II had left - like she'd leave and not ever come back. And there was probably no way to convince him that that wasn't the case, that she was packing her drumkit to take to California, so she and Oscar could drive across the country to look for her dad.
"Come here," she said, patting her leg, and the motion got Oscar's attention and he came over. Marya crouched down and rubbed his ears and kissed the top of his head. "We're going to find Dad, ok? I'm just packing my drums to take them with us. I'm not leaving you ok? So stop panicking, or I'll have to start calling you Cassandra and treating you like you're a crazy, selfish ex." Which was probably mean, but Marya was getting short on patience and she didn't need Cass whining over the phone to tell her to stay, not after Cass dumped her for another girl.
"Just hang out," Marya told Oscar. "Watch me disassemble. Be glad you can't help me pack the car - it's going to be a bitch and a half."
