The only channels she got were BBC America, weirdly enough, TBS, and CNN. CNN had news, naturally, and BBC America, for reasons known only to the Brits, was broadcasting old episodes of Dr Who. Marya knew they were old because she didn't recognize the Doctor.

Well, it was better than nothing, and it was kind of entertaining. The special effects were fun to laugh at, anyway. And Marya only had half an hour before she had to go downstairs and put the next load of laundry in, so she didn't want to get sucked into anything that required a lot of thought.

She did want Cass to call her back, though. And how absurd was it that they'd had a bad breakup and hadn't talked much recently, and now Marya was desperate for this particular ex to call her.

The threat of the end of the world made people do some strange shit, apparently.

Marya watched Dr Who until it was time to take the first load of laundry out of the washing machine and put the second one in. The first wash was all sheets and towels and underwear and socks, so she just threw it all in the dryer and turned it on. A guy she knew in college used to gross her out with tales of how he liked to fuck girls on a running dryer, because of the vibrations. Marya wasn't exactly a prude, but heterosexual sex kind of grossed her out, and once the guy learned she was a lesbian, he wanted her to know all about his sex life. She had been pretty sure he was making it all up, or at least making most of it up, but it still squicked her a little bit.

She'd also heard horror stories about people whose cats liked to sleep in the dryer, and who had dumped a load of wet clothes in the dryer, on top of the cat, and had turned the thing on. Those stories always felt more like urban legends than truth, though, kind of like the stories about babysitters who put the baby in the microwave to dry it off after its bath. Although Marya was privately thankful that Oscar was just a little too big to fit in the dryer. Climbing in the thing if she left the door open was just something he'd do.

He came downstairs while she was unloading and loading the laundry, and Marya realized he'd been a little clingier than normal today. Had he figured out that something was very wrong, and that people were disappearing? Was he just generally a little wigged out, in his deaf doggie way? Had he picked up on Marya's unease, and was this his way of trying to comfort her? Was he scared of something? Could dogs feel fear, anyway?

"What's up?" she asked him. He just looked at her. "Do you have to go out again or something?" That couldn't be it, though - she didn't usually let him out after dinner until right before bed, and he knew that, and it wasn't bedtime yet and he knew that too. She should probably let him out anyway, just to be safe. At least the back yard was empty of strange creatures, even though it was still raining. Rain, she - and Oscar - could deal with.

So she let him out after setting the washing machine for the second load, and he went bounding into the back yard to take a leak with what looked like a combination of glee and relief. Weird dog, Marya thought, closing the door.

She did the dishes from dinner, not that there were many, and watched the end of the Dr Who episode currently showing on TV. She let Oscar in again before going back down to the basement to take out the second load of laundry and put in the third. By the time the last load of clothes was going through the spin cycle, she'd had an idea.

If she couldn't get a hold of her dad, if her dad couldn't come to her, she'd go to him. She'd pack her stuff and take her drums and her dog and drive to California. She didn't want to be stuck in her house with no idea if the one relative left who she actually cared about was alive or dead.
