If he'd been able to get outside his own head, he might've been amazed at how quickly the tone of an evening could change, how quickly your own emotions and intentions could swing.

"Fuck," Laurie said again, heaving himself off the couch with some difficulty. If Lea noticed that he was still kind of hard inside his jeans, she didn't say anything. "Where'd you see him last? What time is it?"

"On the dance floor with that other boy, and just after eleven. I did make Charlotte blush, I think, and when I turned around Danny was gone."

"Could they be in the back somewhere?" Parrish asked.

"Could be. Or the parking lot, or the men's room, who knows."

"What made you worry?" He sounded very calm and rational to Laurie, but it wasn't his questioning half brother who'd just disappeared.

"It's a feeling, ok? I didn't like the way the other boy was starting to look at him, or touch him. Danny wasn't putting up a fight, but - "

"Are you sure you're not both over-reacting?"

"Do you have a younger brother?" Laurie asked Parrish.

"An older sister."

"Ok. Danny's nine years younger than me. I get a little protective. We're gonna go look for him - are you coming?"

"Of course." Parrish got up, discreetly adjusted himself, and the three of them went downstairs.

They checked the bar, the chairs and tables around the dance floor, the floor itself (which was thinning out now that the band had finished their set), the back hall, and the bathrooms. Lea poked her head in the ladies' room just to be sure. Laurie got one of the bouncers to let him out the back door so he could check the parking lot. Lea went out the front door to see if they were on the sidewalk. No Danny.

"Do you think he just left with the guy?" Laurie asked, mostly rhetorically. He didn't think his half brother was quite that irresponsible, but he'd been seventeen himself and even now he sometimes did pretty stupid things in the name of sex. It was possible Danny had let it slip his mind that he had to be home by midnight, and that Laurie had to take him there.

"Maybe," Lea said.

"Does he have a cell phone?" Parrish asked.

"No," Laurie said.

"Do you?"

"I didn't bring it." Which was a really dumb thing to have done.

"Estupido," Lea muttered. She only spoke Spanish when she was really ticked off. Laurie hoped for the boy's sake that when they found him and Danny, he had a good explanation. Either that or he knew how to manage a possessive as-good-as-sister.

"Where would I put it? Ok, this is dumb. You go that way, I'll go this way, Parrish, would you go up to the balcony and see if they're there?"

"Sure," Parrish said, heading off. Laurie went back to check the hallway to the phones and the bathrooms again - sometimes people ended up necking in the curve of the hall, past the bathrooms and near the phone, because it was fairly private.

He wasn't sure how he'd missed them before, but there they were, two boys pressed against each other, one with his back to the wall next to the payphone. The boy on the outside looked like the boy Danny had been dancing with, and as he shifted a little Laurie could see that yes, that was his half brother flat against the wall. The boy had his hands on either side of Danny's face, and his knee pushed between Danny's thighs. Danny's hand rested on his hips. One of them moaned softly - Laurie was close enough to hear them now.

He walked up to them, tapped the boy on the shoulder, and said "Hate to interrupt the party, kids, but Danny has to go home. Curfew and an easily freaked mother, you know." He wasn't sure but he thought the kid jumped, startled, but he whispered something in Danny's ear, slid away, and pushed past Laurie and disappeared. Danny started to slide down the wall. Laurie made a grab for him.

"He didn't make you that weak in the knees, did he..." Laurie teased, but his voice trailed off. Danny just blinked slowly, uncomprehendingly. His eyes were half-closed, like he was half-asleep, and actually he looked stoned. And he didn't seem to be able to stand up, which meant Laurie had to hold him tightly on his upper arms, and pull him to his feet. "Did you take something? Danny? What'd you take?" He resisted the urge to shake his half brother.

"Nothing..." Danny slurred. He even sounded stoned. "Laurie...? Where's... where'd he go...."

"Who? Your friend? Said something to you and vanished." And what had he said, anyway? "Listen to me, Danny, did he give you anything? I can't take you home stoned, Mom would rip me a new one." Danny's head fell forward. Laurie let go of one of his arms and slapped him lightly. "Come on, Danny-boy, stay with me. I saw you with a beer, what else did you have?"

"Just that. One beer. Just one. Swear."

"Nothing else?" He wracked his brains. What drugs were high schoolers taking these days? "X? LSD? God, I don't know.... You don't get like this after one beer."

"Just one...."

That kid must have slipped something in the bottle. Dammit.

"Where'd he go, Danny? What did he say to you before he left?"

"Don' remember. Laurie... Laurie... he was a good kisser."

"Great. I'm happy for you. What's his name?"

"Dave. Dave... something. Want him to come back.... Felt good."

"I bet it did. Look, Danny, he gave you something."

"Just a beer.... Maybe some tongue...." Danny giggled softly. Fuck. Just... fuck.

"We're gonna go home, ok? I'm gonna take you back to my apartment - " Danny's eyes closed and his head fell forward again. Laurie was standing so close by now that their foreheads knocked together. "Danny, wake up. Come on, kid, wake up." He shook his half brother. Danny mumbled something. "What?"

"Wanna lie down...."

"We're going home. Can you make it to the - oh, shit." There was no fucking way Laurie could put Danny on his motorcycle. He needed Lea to find them. "Ok, Danny? We're gonna move. Put your arm around my neck - " he had to pull Danny's arm up and drape it over his shoulders himself, because apparently Danny was too out of it to move " - I'm not going to carry you, you'll have to walk. I'll hold you up. Ok? Moving now." He pulled Danny away from the wall - carefully - and somehow managed to get out of the hallway and towards the main room. Fortunately Parrish reappeared right then, looking first apologetic and then surprised.

"So you found him?" he said. "Is he ok?"

"No," Laurie said, his voice tight. "That cute boy he was dancing with put something in his beer, trying to take advantage of him."

"Oh. Shit. I'm sorry."

"Do you have a car? Did you drive it here?"

"Yes.... I drove one of my friends."

"Can you take Danny back to my apartment? I have a Harley and I can't put him on it like this." He jogged his shoulder to make his point - Danny didn't even twitch. Laurie knew if he let go, Danny would collapse in a heap on the floor. "You just have to follow me. Please."

"Of course. I just have to go find him - my friend - and tell him to get someone else to take him home. Don't go anywhere."

"Don't worry." Although as Parrish was leaving, Laurie managed to maneuver himself and Danny over to the wall, where they could lean without worrying about falling over. Now he just needed Lea.

She showed up a second later, as if his thinking about her had made her appear. She blinked.

"What happened?" she asked.

"Danny's cute friend slipped him something. He's completely out of it. The kid's name is Dave, so if you find him, feel free to wring his neck or something." He added that because Lea had started to look murderous. She'd picked up a lot of the older-sibling possessiveness from her brothers, who would've had the exact same reaction. The only difference was that three Hayden brothers were more likely to put the fear of god in someone than one lone Hayden girl.

"I'm gonna go find the manager," she fumed. "Don't go anywhere."

"Wait! Lea, wait!" She stopped. "I asked Parrish to take us home. Well, take Danny - he'll just follow me. I gotta take him home and put him to bed or something."

"So I can't talk to the manager? You'd let this slide?"

"No, that's not what I'm saying." He could feel Danny stirring next to him. "Just don't expect to bring the guy down to talk to Danny, because I'm taking him home. That's all."

"Ok, ok, fine," she huffed. She didn't look at all pleased, and Laurie couldn't blame her. This whole thing had gotten completely out of hand, and he couldn't shake the feeling that it was his fault. He'd suggested it, he'd brought Danny here, he'd been too interested in getting some of his own to pay attention to what some opportunistic little fag was doing to his half brother.

"This was my fault."

"No it wasn't. I'll go yell at the manager in private. Can I at least give him your phone number? Not that I expect he's going to want to call, but just in case."

"Yeah, sure."

"It'll be ok." Lea leaned forward and kissed Laurie on the cheek, then lifted Danny's chin to kiss him. "Did you at least have a good time?" she asked him. He grinned a slow, drugged grin. "Maybe that was a loaded question. Call me tomorrow. I don't have to be into work until noon. Don't worry about waking me up. Ok?" Laurie nodded. "Night, Danielito," she said softly, running her hand over Danny's hair. "I wish you'd found a nice boy." She patted Laurie on the cheek and her mood abruptly changed as she stomped off.

"Hang on, Danny-boy," Laurie whispered. "You still with me? Mom and Jeremy are gonna skin me alive for this. I'm really fucking sorry." Danny mumbled something. "What?"

"Don't be.... Got to kiss someone. Cute someone. I think... Laurie... I like boys...."

"Well, he got your defenses down and rubbed all over you, of course you do. If I see that kid again, though, I'm gonna hurt him."

"'Kay...."

"You can't focus on a word either of us is saying, can you." No answer. Oh, good, and there's Parrish.

"Sorry that took so long," Parrish said. "I had to find him and calm him down - he thought I was just going to abandon him." He rolled his eyes. He was even cute when he did that.

"Danny... what're you doing?" All of a sudden it felt like his half brother was rubbing up against him, or at least trying to. Great. If Laurie ever found that Dave kid he was going to rip off his balls and make him eat them. Either that or bring Lea along. She knew how to fight dirty. Laurie really didn't. "Danny, cut it out. We're going home, ok?"

"'Kay," Danny said.

"I parked in the lot in back," Parrish said. "It's a maroon Saab." He took one of Danny's arms and slung it around his neck, for which Laurie was grateful. Danny was kind of tall but not especially big, but he was dead weight now and he was heavy.

The three of them stumbled out the back door and through the parking lot until they got to Parrish's car, which was, as far as Laurie could tell, a fairly new convertible Saab. It was a nice-looking car, rich and sleek. Laurie allowed himself a brief moment to be impressed with his ability to pick up a rich boy, and then he held Danny while Parrish got the passenger door open and they stuffed the kid inside.

"I parked out on the sidewalk," Laurie said. "Wait here, I'll go get my bike and you can follow me home. Thanks for doing this."

"No problem. This way I can find out where you live." And Parrish grinned a little grin, and even with the utter mess the night had turned into, Laurie couldn't help but lean in and kiss him. Yeah, he still tasted good.

"I'll be right back. Hang tight."

He had to go back inside the Blind Pig for his and Danny's motorcycle helmets, but that got him through to the sidewalk in less time than it would have taken to walk around the block, and in five minutes he was cruising into the parking lot and aiming for the maroon Saab. Parrish was helpfully still standing outside, leaning on the roof of the car. Laurie waved at him and he got in the open driver's side, started the engine, and followed as Laurie pulled out and headed home.

Oh MAN!! BAD NASTY Dave . . . the whole experience could have screwed Danny up good if had gone any further, what a horrible thing to happen to a confused and vulnerable kid whose just trying to figure out whether he likes boys or girls. Thank GOD they found him before anything really bad could happen . . . and heh, at least he kinda knows he likes boys now.

well, does he like boys because he likes boys, or does he like boys because one happened to make him hard when his defenses were down? and yes, thank god for women's intuition and laurie looking in the same places twice.
