don't take this as canon - i don't know what happens with them, if aurelian turns sam or not. consider this an au, if anything.

"Where have you been?" Aurelian demanded when Sam got back.

"The piazza's flooded again," Sam said. He grinned and stuck out a foot. His boots and the bottoms of his pants were wet. "I splashed around. And I gave a couple directions! They were looking for the ghetto and I knew how to get them there!" He thought about the directions he'd given them. "At least I think I did. Shit, I hope I didn't get them more lost.... I told them to take one of those moonlight gondola rides, I said they're really romantic."

"As I recall," Aurelian mused, "when we tried to do that, it rained."

"That's right! The gondolier was so ticked. Poor guy. He was cute, though."

"He was." Aurelian looked him up and down speculatively. "And what did you do for the two hours when the sun was out? Between showers?"

"I took refuge in the Doge's Palace. I had a really weird conversation with the lady in the gift shop - her English was worse than my Italian. She was really cute, though, she was like someone's grandma. She looked a little like my grandma Nina." He paused a moment to miss his grandma Nina, and then went on. "I think she asked me why I was hiding inside when the sun was out, so I tried to tell her I had a sun allergy. It's sort of true."

"And perhaps better than the truth, yes."

"At least I didn't show her my fangs. She asked me where I was from, and get this - she has a nephew who went to Eden for school and just never came home! He married an American girl. She sounded proud of him." He had to stop because repeating the story reminded him of his own family, and that was kind of depressing.

It must have shown on his face, because Aurelian came over and held him.

"You love and are loved, Samuel," he said. "You are a good man, and yo are living your life so that you are happy. You still love them, no?" Sam nodded. "And they know this?" Another nod. "They cannot fault you for the choices you make to preserve your happiness."

"Yeah, well...." They could, actually. His cousin Sean would only see him and Aurelian in a public place. He hadn't been to the house in years.

Sam tried to shake it off. They were supposed to be having a good time here. He leaned back. "So what did you do today, while I was out getting rained on and jumping in puddles?" Aurelian smiled.

"I did a great deal of nothing. So much nothing I lost track of time. Now" - he smacked Sam lightly on the butt - "Giovanna is expecting us in half an hour. You might want to consider drying off and changing your clothes."

"Yes mom." Sam kissed his boyfriend, disentangled himself, and went off to change. He liked Venice - he liked most of the places they'd been - and he liked most of Aurelian's friends, some of whom were now also his friends, and he loved traveling with him, but he missed Eden. He was ready to go home.
