chapt 1 (yes, still)
Nov. 2nd, 2003 11:58 pm>>Danny looked at him and asked "Laurie - how'd you know you were gay?"<<
Laurie blinked. He certainly hadn't been expecting that.
"Huh?" he said stupidly.
"How'd you know you were gay?" Danny repeated.
"I wanted to kiss the football team, not the cheerleaders. Don't tell me...."
"I dunno." Danny shrugged again and dropped his head back onto the couch. "There's this guy on the soccer team - Marcus, he's the goalie - he's - shit, Laurie, he's hot."
"He makes you hard, huh?"
"Yeah. It's stupid." Danny sighed and closed his eyes. Laurie reached over and poked him in the arm.
"Hey, look at me." Danny opened his eyes again and turned his head. "It's not stupid. It happens. It doesn't mean anything, though." Danny raised an eyebrow at him, and it was Laurie's turn to sigh. "Ok, there was this girl I knew in high school, Heather Callahan. She had a locker a couple down from Lea. She was really cute, even I thought so. I dreamed about her one night and it made me so hard I woke up. I had to go in the bathroom and jerk off so I could go back to sleep, and you know who I thought about? Her." Danny's eyebrow climbed into his hair in disbelief. Laurie grinned. He wouldn't have believed it himself, except that it had happened to him. "Yeah, I know. But see, just 'cause you think this Marcus guy is hot doesn't mean you're gay."
"Briana doesn't do it for me any more."
"That doesn't mean anything either."
"Well how do I know what does mean something? How do I know it's not, like, over-identification or some shit?"
Laurie thought. He wished Danny hadn't sprung this on him at this hour - he was way too tired to sort out his half brother's love life. Being seventeen was hard enough, he remembered, without having to work out if you liked boys or girls. Or both. Maybe Danny was bi. There was really only one way to find out.
"There's one thing you can do," Laurie said. "You gotta find a boy and kiss him." Danny didn't look too turned off. Laurie figured if he really was straight, he'd have looked appalled.
"Are you going out tomorrow night?" Danny asked, in that casual kind of voice that meant he really really wanted to go with Laurie, if Laurie was going to a bar to possibly pick up boys.
"Band practice. I got the lunch shift at the restaurant too. No, you're not coming out with me, Mom would kill us both. She might kill me anyway. Jeremy's gonna think this is my fault." A while ago, Laurie had privately come to the conclusion that one reason his stepdad wasn't so bent out of shape about him being gay was because he wasn't technically Jeremy's kid. He wasn't a blood son, he was just an adopted son. Now, if Danny were to come out, that would be something else entirely.
"Shit," Laurie sighed. "Can we talk about this tomorrow? I really have to go to bed. I'm fucking exhausted. We'll figure it out, ok? I know it kinda sucks, but it's not life or death." He heaved himself off the couch. Damn, he was tired. And he was working lunch tomorrow. Was he insane? "You can sleep with me or on the couch, I don't care. You want some pajamas or something to sleep in?"
"Nah, I'm good. Um... you mind if I sleep with you? Your couch is too short." Danny was just about Laurie's height, although a little scrawnier. He'd probably fill out halfway through college - Laurie had suddenly grown two inches in the middle of his sophomore year, which had baffled his mom and annoyed him because all his jeans were suddenly too short.
"It pulls out, stupid." But Laurie grinned. "Just don't attack me in my sleep, 'kay?"
"'Kay."
Laurie went into the bathroom to brush his teeth, then into the bedroom to strip off his clothes (except for his boxer briefs, which he left on because sleeping naked with his half brother was too weird for him) and crawl into bed. He thoughtfully left the light on for his half brother, but Danny got into bed with him without flipping the switch.
"Light," Laurie said.
"What about it?"
"Turn it off."
"Oh. Sorry." Danny got out of bed, turned off the bedroom light, and tripped on something on his way back, which made him stumble and literally fall into the bed. "Ow! What the fuck?"
"Watch your step."
"Now you tell me." Danny pulled on the blankets. Laurie had forgotten that the kid was a blanket hog. "Thanks."
"No problem." It was the least he could do. "Go to sleep, ok?"
"Ok. Night."
"Night."
Ok, so the day had started well. It had certainly ended weird.
